GPA 5.83/7.0 (WAM 78) is the recommended format.🇦🇺 Australian Grading System — HD, D, C, P, F
Australian universities use a 5-band letter grade system with corresponding mark ranges and 7-point GPA values:
Australian GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Points) ÷ Σ(Credit Points)
Worked example: 3 courses (6 credit points each) with grades HD (7), D (6), C (5):
GPA = (7×6 + 6×6 + 5×6) ÷ (6+6+6) = (42+36+30) ÷ 18 = 108 ÷ 18 = 6.00
📐 What is WAM? — Weighted Average Mark Explained
WAM (Weighted Average Mark) is uniquely Australian. Unlike the 7-point GPA (which collapses 75–84% into "D" = 6 GPA), WAM preserves your actual raw mark (the 0–100% you scored), weighted by credit points across all completed courses.
WAM is widely considered the more important metric at Australian universities — it's used for Honours classification, Master's admission, scholarship eligibility, Dean's List recognition, and academic merit calculations. A student with WAM 78 is more meritorious than one with WAM 76 even though both have GPA 6.0 (Distinction band).
WAM = Σ(Mark × Credit Points) ÷ Σ(Credit Points)
Worked example: 3 courses (6 credit points each) with marks 82%, 75%, 70%:
WAM = (82×6 + 75×6 + 70×6) ÷ (6+6+6) = (492+450+420) ÷ 18 = 1362 ÷ 18 = 75.67
Why WAM matters more than GPA in Australia:
- Granular precision: WAM distinguishes 76 from 84 (both D-grade GPA 6.0 but different WAM)
- Honours classification: H1, H2A, H2B, H3 are determined entirely by WAM thresholds
- Master's admission ranking: When two applicants have identical GPA 6.0, WAM is the tiebreaker
- Scholarship decisions: Most Australian scholarships rank by WAM, not GPA
- Dean's List: Usually WAM 85+ threshold (not GPA-based)
- Research thesis eligibility: Many require WAM 75+ to enrol in honours/4th-year research stream
🏅 Australian Honours Classification — H1, H2A, H2B, H3
Australian universities award degree Honours based on your Honours-year WAM (or in some cases your overall WAM). Four classifications are used, plus Pass:

🔄 Convert Australian GPA / WAM to US 4.0, Indian CGPA, UK Class
When applying overseas from Australia, you'll need to express your Australian metrics in the destination country's grade format. Here are the conversion formulas:
US GPA = Australian GPA × (4 ÷ 7) ≈ Aus GPA × 0.571
Australian WAM → US 4.0 GPA:
US GPA ≈ (WAM ÷ 100) × 4 (linear) — or use WES official evaluation
Australian WAM → Indian CGPA:
Indian CGPA ≈ WAM ÷ 10 (for ×10 universities like VTU/KTU/AKTU)
Australian WAM → UK Honours Class:
WAM 70+ → First Class | 60–69 → 2:1 | 50–59 → 2:2 | 40–49 → 3rd
Worked examples:
Aus GPA 6.0 (D / WAM ~78) → US GPA 3.43 → Indian CGPA 7.8 → UK 2:1 / First
Aus GPA 7.0 (HD / WAM ~88) → US GPA 4.0 → Indian CGPA 8.8 → UK First Class

WAM 77.67 → H2A (Second Class Honours, Division 1) ⭐
Cross-scale conversions:
US 4.0 GPA ≈ 3.33 | Indian CGPA ≈ 7.77 | UK 1st Class
When Australian GPA & WAM Matter Most
- Australian Master's coursework admission. All Go8 and most non-Go8 universities require minimum WAM 55–70 depending on program. Competitive programs (engineering, CS, business) require WAM 65–75+.
- Australian Master's by Research / PhD admission. Almost always require Honours-equivalent (H2A or H1, WAM 75+). PhD with Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend scholarship requires H1 (WAM 80+).
- Dean's List / academic honors. Most Australian universities recognise students with WAM 85+ on Dean's List (some 80+, varies by university). Appears on official transcripts.
- Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) / Research Training Program Stipend. Federal scholarships for PhD students require H1 (WAM 80+) typically, plus strong research proposal.
- Australian PR migration (Skilled Independent / Skilled Nominated). Department of Home Affairs requires Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) via VETASSESS or similar. Your Australian GPA on 7-point scale is included in the academic credentials report.
- Graduate job applications (Big 4, BCG, McKinsey, Macquarie Bank, CBA). Top Australian employers often filter at WAM 75+ (Distinction equivalent). Some specifically require H1 (WAM 80+) for management/consulting tracks.
- Internship applications. Engineering internships (Atlassian, Canva, Macquarie, Westpac) typically expect WAM 70+ for cadetships, WAM 75+ for graduate programs.
- International MS applications from Australia. US/UK/Canadian MS programs require WAM/GPA conversion via WES (WAM 75+ ≈ US 3.0+ GPA, qualifies for most MS minimums).
- Honours Year admission. Many Australian universities require minimum WAM 65 (some 70) in your major-relevant subjects to enrol in the optional 4th-year Honours research stream.
- Professional school applications. Australian Law (JD), Medical (MD), Dentistry, Pharmacy — typically require WAM 70+ alongside professional admission tests (LSAT, GAMSAT, UCAT).
7 Practical Tips for Australian Students Tracking GPA & WAM
- Track WAM, not just GPA. WAM is more granular and more important for Australian admissions. A student with WAM 79.5 has nearly H1 distinction; one with WAM 76 is solidly H2A — both could have GPA 6.0.
- Check your university's WAM weighting policy. UNSW weights Year 3 at 1.5x, ANU weights Honours research at 2x — your transcript WAM may differ from naive average. Verify with your faculty handbook.
- Aim for WAM 75+ for Go8 Master's admission. WAM 75 = H2A (Upper Second / Distinction) — the threshold that opens most Go8 Master's programs and qualifies you for some scholarships.
- Use the calculator's Mode 1 every semester. Track your WAM after each semester to project end-of-year totals. The 30-second check maintains motivation and goal-setting.
- WD (Withdraw) vs F (Fail) decision. If you're failing a course mid-semester, withdraw before the census date — WD doesn't affect WAM/GPA, while F drags both down significantly.
- Light electives can save WAM. If you need WAM repair, choose electives with reputations for fair grading. Use platforms like StudentVIP, Reddit r/UNSW, r/UniMelb to research course difficulty.
- Provide GPA + WAM on resumes. Best Australian resume practice: "WAM: 78 (H2A) | GPA: 6.0/7.0" — gives recipients both metrics without forcing conversion. For international resumes: add "(≈3.1 US GPA / 7.8 Indian CGPA)".
